Fashion Revolution Week, which runs from 22nd to 28th of April, aims to get us looking closer at the way our clothes are sourced, produced and consumed. We share the best Fashion Revolution Week events happening around Australia.

If you have an interest in sustainable fashion, you’ll love these Fashion Revolution Week events, which run all the way past the end of the week into May.

You can learn more about the fashion industry’s impact, learn how to repair and upcycle your clothes and accessories, learn how to sew, discover new slow fashion brands, and find out the solutions for a more sustainable wardrobe.

Victoria events

24 APRIL: Fashion Revolution Film Screening RiverBlue ($10)

RiverBlue reveals how the fashion industry, denim especially, is playing a part in destroying our world's rivers. Narrated by clean water supporter Jason Priestley, the documentary examines the destruction of our rivers and its effect on humanity, and shares the solutions for a more sustainable future.

27 APRIL: The Slow Fashion Market ($2)

You’ll only find quality, durable fashion and accessories made from materials that are sustainable and non-toxic and either made by the seller themselves or by workers who are paid a fair wage at this market! 50 independent brands worth supporting will be selling their wares.

27 APRIL-1 JUNE: Suzie Blake:”Blood Mountain” Art Exhibition

Artist and feminist, Suzie Blake’s art installation features a 3 000 km mound of red clothing and apparel dotted with t-shirts with feminist slogans. She created the artwork “in response to the fast fashion industry piggybacking on the feminist movement by way of feminist slogans”.

28 APRIL: Repair and Sew for Slow Fashion ($3-$5)

There is so much happening at this event, which includes documentaries on fashions dirty secrets, an upcycling and clothes repair station, the chance to give sewing a try, and the chance to learn about organic skin and clothes care products.

3 MAY: Fitted for a Fashion Revolution ($22)

Learn more about the fast fashion crisis from special guest speakers and screenings of various short films on why we need a fashion revolution and enjoy a recycled fashion runway show. Hosted by the Conscious Closet, the proceeds from this event’s ticket sales support Fitted for Work‘s mission to help women experiencing disadvantage to regain their confidence and secure and maintain employment.

New South Wales events

26 APRIL: Open Studio: Upcycling/Mending Morning Tea (free)

Discover ways to breath new life into your pre-loved items and disused resources! Hosts, Brigid McLaughlin, which makes it a priority to reduce waste as it believes it’s the greatest problem yet the easiest to fix, will also talk about their processes and share ideas about sustainability, upcycling and reducing waste in general.

27 APRIL: WhoMadeMyClothes Walking Trail ($27.50)

Organised as part of the Slow Wearing Well community initiative, on the WhoMakeMyClothes Walking Trail, you’ll discover all the business owner-operators, designers and craftspeople in Newcastle that manufacture in-store and on-site, provide sustainable clothing solutions, and share skills and education.

27-28 APRIL: Make your own Zero Waste Tote with Citizen Wolf ($20)

You’ll make a zero waste tote out of off-cut scraps from Citizen Wolf‘s made-to-measure t-shirt production and reclaimed City of Sydney event banners at this event! Basic sewing skills will come in handy but are not necessary. There are five workshops to choose from on 27 and 28 April.

2 MAY: The Possibility Project Fashion Revolution 2019 'Alter.Ego' ($15)

Learn creative ways to (alter the ego) and how common sense solutions can be implemented in the slow fashion industry, as well as practical and specialised solutions to mending and altering your clothes. You can even bring an item of clothing to mend, alter or reimagine on the night! The Possibility Project is a social enterprise which aims to help nurture social and environmental change within the fashion industry.

4 MAY: GLC Rethink your Wardrobe - a clothes swap and panel discussion (free)

A panel of sustainable fashion experts and innovators will explore how we can all wear better, maintain and grow our personal style and have less impact on our environment. After the discussion there will be cake and a clothes swap!

Queensland events

26 APRIL: Refashion - upcycling masterclass ($85)

Be inspired to and learn how to reinvent your existing clothing and textiles into personalised garments! You’ll see subtraction cutting in action, various upcycling techniques will be discussed, and you’ll get to work on your own upcycle. AND you’ll be able to continue working on it and other projects afterwards as after you are inducted to use the fabrication lab sewing machines, you can use them at no cost whenever the lab is open.

26-28 APRIL: Brisbane Makers + Menders, Movers + Shakers 3 day Fashion Revolution event (free)

Over these three days of celebrating all that is local, sustainable and creative, a range of panel discussions on how we can revolutionise the fashion system will be held, as well as sewing, styling, making and mending workshops run by experienced facilitators. Makers will also be there to be met and there’ll be pre-loved clothing to fall in love with and take home.
